CLASS TITLE: Summertime
Teacher: Margaret Bendig

In class, we will explore the joys of working with silk and stitching on this cheerful canvas sampler.  Summer Time is composed of 40 different blocks in a variety of stitches in addition to the border patterns.  The purpose of this project is to study the effects of light on silk and patterns in a design.  For two days we will discuss the use of silk, silk laying techniques and pattern usage.  You have the choice of two different color ways; each color way has two over-dyed silks in addition to eight solid colors.  Come prepared to have some fun, learn a new technique or a few and spend a couple of days in the joy of stitching.

Size: approximately 10” square
Kit Contents: 50 pages of printed instructions, color copy, needles, and all threads needed to complete the project.  The project can be kitted in two different color ways: blues, yellows and cream on white congress cloth or geranium (rose/red), greens and creams on eggshell congress cloth.
Students Need to Bring to Class: 2 pairs 16” stretcher bars and tacks for mounting canvas, magnification and extra lighting recommended if you struggle with congress cloth, must have a laying tool for use in class and it is suggested that the student bring highlighters.

CLASS TITLE: Evening Bag

A counted pattern of golden stitches and lustrous beads is worked on cream linen over a gold mask to create the rich texture behind the featured reticello pocket on this evening bag.  The lace is composed of wrapped bars, large cloth stitch pyramids worked around a square, a buttonhole stitch band with one thread bars and Venetian picots.  Small obtuse bars outline the central design.  The “purse hardware” is a dense pattern of beads edging the opening at the top of the slender bag.  The purse is interfaced, lined with silk, and ends in a shaped fringe of bead lines to complete the elegant look.  A golden, twisted cord serves as the shoulder strap and a magnetic snap closes the bag.  Class time will be primarily spent working on the lace with some time devoted to the gold and bead embroidery.  Construction techniques will be discussed.

CLASS TITLE: What Do I Do with This Canvas?
Teacher: John Waddell

The class would work with individual students’ needs and problems with one (1) painted canvas.  The students would provide to the teacher (prior to class) an accurate and to scale color picture of their canvas.  With this color picture each student will indicate six (6) areas of specific interest for the teacher to address.  All of the canvases will be discussed in class and an open discussion in class will cover each canvas.  This time will be open to all students to ask questions related to the canvas or related areas of concern to the students.  This class is focused at the students getting a better understanding of the process of choosing stitches, threads, colors and textural needs.  After this a rotation system will be developed to address individual needs and concerns of the students.  The process of developing the individual canvases will progress as the class continues.  Threads will not be provided with the class but students are encouraged to bring possible thread choices they are considering and we will utilize the seminar shop for thread options.

Kit Contents: includes teachers individualized stitch suggestions for areas of concern and pages for recording further canvas development ideas and suggestions.

Teacher note: I have been teaching three (3) canvas embellishment classes a week for more than eight years. During that time I have also been writing stitch guides commercially for painted canvases.  I have taught for ANG, EGA, Callaway and TNNA.  I have taught across the country and in Canada and Mexico.  Specifically I have taught this type of class many times in a seminar or retreat format.  This is an opportunity to share this process with students.  I do not want to just tell them what to do.  I want each of them to come away from the class with a better understanding of the process, a better feeling about making these choices.
