Techniques and trims for linen-like materials
(canvas is not covered)

A 2-day notebook course

This class is designed to cover techniques and trims used to finish small items made of linen or linenlike materials. Though many of these techniques may be adapted for canvas pieces, the focus is on needlework done on linen and other soft fabrics (aida, jobelan, cotton broadcloth, batiste, etc.)
Small items to be covered include ornaments and pinkeeps, featuring flat padded finish. Students will make notebook samples of a pinkeep using blank linen from their “stash” or they may choose to stitch a small design on the fabric prior to the class.
Hand-sewing techniques used in these finishes include ladder stitch, whip stitch, and twisted cord application.  Samples of the items used in mounting, fusing and lining techniques will be gathered in a notebook.  Notebook pages on twisted cord will include samples of cord made with fibers of various sizes. Tassel samples will also be made using several techniques.
The 50+ page notebook will include instructions and drawings of all techniques covered as well as sample pages for all the materials discussed. Plastic pockets will be included for the numerous material samples and finishing samples. An accessory box will be provided to hold the various small items in the kit. There will be many techniques included in the notebook that a 2-day class will not cover. This will be a reference for
future finishing work. Customized classes covering additional techniques or set pieces are offered by the teacher.
Many of my commercial designs (published under the name Fancy Work) feature these finishing and trim techniques. A photo gallery of some of these pieces is included in the notebook for reference.
